21 Sep Coronavirus: Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan tests positive | UK News
Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has tested positive for COVID-19.
The club confirmed the 29-year-old tested positive in the latest round of testing. There is no word on his condition.
He is set to miss three matches for City while he observes a 10-day period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK government protocol on quarantine.
Gundogan is the third member of Pep Guardiola’s squad to test positive for the virus, following winger Riyad Mahrez and defender Aymeric Laporte – who are both now back in training.
Gundogan will miss the club’s first Premier League match of the season against Wolves on Monday evening, as well as Thursday’s Carabao Cup game against Bournemouth and Sunday’s league game against Leicester City.
A statement from the Club said: “Everyone at the club wishes Ilkay a speedy recovery.”
He is a regular starter in City’s midfield and made 49 appearances in all competitions last term as well as being a key part of the treble-winning side the year before.
It comes as Leyton Orient issued a statement saying “a number” of the team have contracted coronavirus.
A spokesperson said: “We have also informed Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle and Oldham Athletic, our three most recent opponents, prior to the public release of this information.
“Leyton Orient’s priority is the health and well-being of its players and staff. Those who have tested positive will now strictly follow government self-isolation guidelines.”
The Breyer Group Stadium and training ground facilities will be closed until further notice.
